Randy....the gas/air mixture is "sucked" into the engine cyl......doesen't make any difference if the carb. is up draft, side draft,or down draft as on most car engines.....when the exhaust valve is closed and the intske valve is open and the piston is traveling down,it is sucking air and gas through the carb.,into the cylinder.....Get you a book that shows the 4 stroke engine....(intake stroke), exhaust valve is closed and piston is traveling down,sucking gas and air mixture into the cylinder....the intake valve closes and the piston comes up ,compressing mixture,(compression stroke)...spark explodes and drives the piston down,(power stroke)....piston moves back up,exhaust valve opens,expells burnt gasses,(exhaust stroke)....then it all starts over again....
