I would disagree, the extra weight of battery and generator needed to maintain the charge was for the added convienance of electric start and lights which were added after wwII. Proir to that the mag was king it was self reliant and trouble free. Ever think of how they started a battery type with out the aid of the battery charger? People had little money and lights were a add on feature for those with money.
The 94yr old and his 76yr old son cut there teeth on this type tractor (A-BN) which were a great improvement over the past, although the 94yr old says he loved his horse teams and they are still fresh in his mind!
