The magneto was the standard when "crank start" and tractor came about. The magneto "fit" the situation the way it make electricity from uh nothing, magnets.
Later electric start came about. Then electricity was stored in the battery. Distributor and coils are cheaper than magnetos so tractors changed to them. Distributors are easier to manufactacture, tolearance and maintain than a magneto. It takes more power to run a magneto. Very few applications require a magneto: airplane, top fuel dragster.
