Hard to tell. Had same thing happen with our 544 a couple years ago. All the sudden started banging while I was mowing with it. Pulled the head off and found what looked like the ground electrode off a spark plug - but all the plugs were in good shape. Have had pieces of junk fall into exhaust manifold and get sucked in the engine too.

I would take the carb apart and see if anything is missing. Would also check out air intake system, air cleaner, pipe, etc.
