That deal you took off to put the voltage regulator on, was a cut out. That was what was on there originally. And tractor was originally positive ground. The light switch had 4 settings. First position was low charge. Second was high charge. Third was low beam lights. The fourth was high beam lights. If the decal is still there by the light switch nob it has letters to indicate the various settings. Now then, I believe you are correct about not being able to get the original cut out parts. Atleast I had trouble as well. Is what I did was got used parts that were still functional and kept everything original. If original you just kept the thing on low charge untill you think the battery is getting a little weak and then put it on high charge for awhile. I would just about bet that when you converted to the voltage regulator, something is crossed up and not right. For one thing, that light switch should probably only function the lights now and nothing else. You shouldn't need any wires from that switch itself running to the voltage regulator like you did for the cut out. I am not just real sure how the thing should be wired up for the regulator. But anyways, thats where I would start. And one more thing. The H was originally postive ground, but the cut out system could be run negative ground by simply polarizing the generator and switching the wires on the amp guage. This would not hurt anything. But remember, voltage regulators are either positive or negative ground and they won't work the other way. So like a positive grounded regulator can not be run on a negative grounded tractor or vise versa. I don't know if I helped ya but hopefully there is some info here you didn't already know. Good luck.
