I'm restoring a 1946 Farmall A. When I drained the oil, the fluid that came out was light brown and mixed with green antifreeze. Right off the bat I know I have to replace the head gasket, but after removing the oil pan and inspecting the interior of the engine block, the crank, piston rods, and block walls were covered with a thin layer of black crud. My question is this.....would it be OK to use engine de-greaser to clean off the built up sludge, then wash it off with water and thoroughly lubricate with clean oil?? I'm concerned the sludge has blocked some of the small lubricating ports typically found in the lower block/crankcase area. I'm thinking that using de-greaser will eliminate the sludge and antifreeze, and at the same time open the small lubricating ports so that I can be assured that clean oil can flow to all areas needed. All comments welcome.
