At a family reunion today on the old home place, my uncle & I went to check out his old M to date it. The torque tube casting date, 10-4-47, included a number, "47" at the end, where usually a letter is (it WAS the casting date, and could be read plain as day). The chassis serial number is 163678, which indicates it is a 1948 model. I could not locate any other casting dates through the crud. I have never heard of IH using a number in the casting date instead of a letter to indicate the year. If the "47" did refer to 1947, wouldn't it be unusual for an October-manufactured part to be included on a tractor probably assembled toward the middle of the next year, as indicated by the chassis serial number? (P.S.: My motive was to get my uncle to give the M to me. After looking at it for awhile(it's been sitting up for 20 years), lovingly, he said," You know, I need to pull this thing out and get it back running." Dang it! He's 78, and he will probably do it. He did offer me the Allis Chalmers CA).

I tried to use an easy out but it wasn't budging and I didn't want t
