The casting date, as opposed to a casting code, did happen occaisionally. There was sometimes a delay between casting and production, especially if there was a strike. There was a strike somewhere in that timeframe but I don't recall the exact date. For some serial number lists, the first of the "year" actually starts the November of the previous year.
