No need for a resistor. Resistors are put in when you have a six volt system, that you change to twelve volt, and you don't want to have to change out the coil, distributor parts, etc. Our 400 has a larger coil than original, eg. it is only held on by one bolt and the bracket won't fit both the holes at the same time (same situation as yours). I assume that it must be a newer coil too.
