Yeah, I know the timing mark is a bugger to find, I've had to find it on the '47 A and my '45 BN. I usualy just get on the compression stroke and then use a big screw driver to move the flywheel. I just could not see it on this '41, but then again I was getting tired. :) I didn't think about a stuck ring, and I didn't check the other cylinders (which I really should have). What I may just do is fill the cyclinders with oil and let the whole thing sit for a while. Then when spring comes around have the head reworked, the block welded (yeah I didn't mention the TWO cracks in the water jacket, luckly there isn't any water in the oil. I did a temporary fix with RTV, which BTW works quite well!), and go from there. I might stick with this Fairbanks Mag, I have a feeling an IH will cost a more then a few pennys. Still would be nice if it ran, I mean it's a heck of a lot eaier to drive then push... mk

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
