Hugh, My 140 is just a little bit later than yours (23,000 or so). It definitely came as a six volt system, with positive ground. What you describe doesn't surprise me. Before I converted to 12V, I had to jump my 6V battery frequently. I always jumped from a 12V battery, and it would start quick. The 6V just never seemed to have enough power to crank it over, especially when it was cold out. My guess is that you have a 6V battery and that it is shot. You should seriously consider upgrading to 12V, negative ground with electronic ignition before you put much time and money into your 6V system. You'll be much happier in the long run. Good luck.
