it won't harm anything, as long as you see that the voltage on the battery doesn't raise a lot higher than 7 volts.
A good trick that i have used several times is to put 10-15 meters of some iron wire in series with the ground lead, to reduce the charging current. Had to do this because battery was completely empty, and the thermal switch didn't stay on in my battery charger. it's only necessary of course if you keep blowing fuses.
