the first generators (6 volt) used the cutout. this is a single contact relay that disconnects the generator from the battery when motor is off so there is no discharge. this system needs a resistor in the head light switch to replace what is normally the "current regulator coil" in a modern regulator. lights off, low charge, lights on high charge--simple system. about the time most companies switched to 12 volt generators, they also updated to the voltage regulator, which has 3 coils internal and 3 or 4 terminals on the outside. They are marked F (field) G (genertor) and B (battery) and possibly a groudn wire. It is possible to have a 6 volt generator with a voltage regulator, there were a few, but most of the "old 6 volt" systems had the cutout. it has a battery and generator terminals (2) and is about the size of an ice cube. if you need a picture or wiring diagram of either, just send e-mail.
