The earlier H's had a cut out instead of voltage regulator. The later ones, it is my understanding that they had a voltage regulator instead of cut out. Not sure when the change accured. An easy way to tell is to take the cap off the little box. The cut out had 1 set of points. The regulator should have more than one set of points. The regulator may also have more electrical terminals and may state wheather it is positive ground or negative ground. The cut out won't state what ground it is becuase it will work either way as long as it is polarized the right way according to how the battery is hooked up. Also the cut out system had a 4-way light switch from factory. The voltage regulator had a 3 setting light switch from factory (off, low beam, and bright beam). If the tractor was released from factory with cut out, the operator of the tractor controlled the charging system by way of the light switch. The settings were like this (low charge, high charge) these two settings with lights off. And the other two settings (dim lights and bright lights) were with cut out and generator on high charge. The decale that went by the light switch had letters to indicate the various settings and were something like this( L, H, D, B ) or ( O, D, B ) if released with regulator. In order for the system to work properly all components must be good, connections must be clean and tight, the light switch/ampe meter box must be well grounded, and the generator must be polarized the correct way. The system was originally from factory positive ground (this means the positive post of battery was hooked up as ground). I believe there is some testing and polarizing information posted in the archive section. Or otherwise post an update here and we will see if we can help you, but hopefully you will be able to figure out what you got and how everything works by reading this.
