Having a mag is no problem, dont even concern the type of battery. The one wire alternator is set to "start charge" in the 2000 RPM range for speed boats or custom trucks. Trouble on a tractor is getting it to kick in and start charge. Some guys install real small pulleys to make it spin faster, some guys rev the motor wide open. I personally like the factory GM alternator with the two prong plug. Not really that hard to wire up. Look for a mid 1975-85 chevy style Delco 10SI.
