A turn of the crank and the A purrs to life!

Well I guess it wasn't quite that simple. I finished reassembling my '47 A on Christmas eve (Q&D rebuild, rings, bearing, valve job etc). So I went and filled the radiator, installed the plugs, added gas and started cranking. The best I could do was a sputter, with the engine just puffing a little smoke on each crank... So I grabbed a can of either and sprayed a little in the hole in the manifold right above the carb (has a little plug in it if that helps), and she fired right up, for a few second... Well did the same thing two or three times and pretty much determined that I had a carb issue. Now give that this is the carb I just rebuilt for my other A (the 41, read below), I went and found the one that was on the 47 (which has been sitting in kerosene for about a year and a half). Drained the kerosene out, installed it, and 3 cranks later it sputtered to life. Given it took a few more cranks and some fiddling with the choke to get it to run, not all that bad. I must say that having an engine you rebuilt fire up for the first time is quiet a thrill! So, now all the goodies, great oil pressure, the cylinder pressure is back up to where is should be, and more importantly even, and not a puff of blue smoke in sight. So after retorqueing the head I took it for a spin around the farm, I must say it felt like a victory lap! So back to that faulty carb. It was on a 41 A that a friend gave me. I have been trying to that old girl going for a while. The carb was really gummed up so I bought a rebuild kit and did the usual clean and replace. When I installed it on the tractor it did the same thing, just little puffs of smoke. I assumed this was due to the low pressure on the number 2 and 3 cylinders (stuck rings I hope). Well now that I know that the carb isn't helping, where should I go next? Sounds like it's starved for fuel to me. I didn't reset the float when I did the rebuild, and it seemed a little on the low side (that is it would shut off quicker), could that be the problem? Maybe I'm asking to much, that is having two running tractors that I worked on. :) Thanks! mk

New Hitches For Your Old Tractor - by Chris Pratt. For this article, we are going to make the irrational and unlikely assumption that you purchased an older tractor that is in tip top shape and needs no immediate repairs other than an oil change and a good bath. To the newcomer planning to restore the machine, this means you have everything you need for the moment (something to sit in the shop and just look at for awhile while you read the books). To the newcomer that wants to get out and use the machine for field work, you may have already hit a major roadblock. That is the dreaded "proprietary hitch". With the exception of the
