Thanks for all the great info, Wardner. The fwd drive unit on this 560 does attach about where a belt pulley would go, right under the fuel tank. Then it goes towards the right("passenger") side of the tractor, and appears to have a long chain drive enclosed in a metal case going downwards that the front driveshaft comes out of. The front axle does appear to be a heavy military unit. It's all covered in many years worth of grease and grime, so I couldn't see any markings. I looked again at the W-9(or similar) picture, and there are regular military tread tires on the front of that tractor, so I assume that whatever the case was there it also used a military axle. Just for the record, the picture is on the cover of the "Nebraska Cattlemen" magazine, Jan. '68 issue, and shows the tractor pulling a large(6 ton) stack of hay- one guy driving and another guy pitching hay- in a snowstorm. Straight-on front view of the tractor so it's hard to see what it really is. Thanks again for the info!

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
