Just a minor clarification: Connect the resistor between the coil and the points. If it is a 12-volt coil, it should receive 12-volt power.

Everything between the resistor and ground will be 6 volts, give or take. If you had a 6 volt coil you would need to connect the resistor between your ignition switch and the coil.
