Our 1256 does the same thing. There are steel rollers in the tranny top cover that latch into grooves to hold it in gear. Ours get worn flat every couple of years and need to be replaced again this year. I'm not sure how to get to them - always have the dealer do ours. Here is a trick to get you by: put the gearshift lever between 2nd and 3rd so that transmission is in nuetral. Then shift the range lever into high. After you have the range lever in high then select your gear - always works for me.
