Greg,
Disconnect the wire from the coil to the distributor. Reconnect the battery and if your electrical problem still exist it is from the coil back and is most likely a shorted coil. If the overheating of the leads ceases the problem is a short in the distributor. Did you get around to verifying that the points are not stuck shut?
