I missed whatever was said about universal joints, but from your comment it seems you were told that they would not be reliable at engine speeds. They are, and are used in many applications at speeds higher than the 1750 or so RPM that your engine runs. So if driving a pump directly from your crankshaft via a u-joint was pooh-poohed by someone, you might want to take their advice with a grain of salt......
