If you have a true "12 volt" coil (has an internal resistor), no external resistor is req'd. But if you have a 6 volt coil you will need a ballast resistor. The resistor has gotta go in series in the circuit, anywhere between the coil terminal of the ign switch and the primary terminal on the distributor. I prefer to locate the resistor near the ign switch so it can be somewhat hidden. But have seen them screwed right onto the side of the distributor, hose-clamped to the coil, mounted on the voltage regulator plate, etc. and wired accordingly.
