Bob, I am confused by the term true "12 volt" coil as it implies that all 12 volt coils have an internal resistor. Early 12 volt G.M. cars had a 12 volt coil but required an external ballast resistor. I am unsure when the resistors went internal. You and I agree as to where the ballast resistor mounts electrically in the circuit. Do you agree that the ballast resistor performs two functions. One, it permits the use of a coil that is designed to function at a lower voltage (6 to 9) in order to give a boost (12 volts) if your circuit allows you to bypass the resistor during cranking and second to dampen oscillations between the coil primary and the capacitior across the points. The latter actually causes more energy to be retained in the core of the coil and can increase spark intensity. Certainly nothing is gained by omitting the resistor. To really create a controversy..... How many of the ones that posted to this site know that on a negative ground system the potential, to the center electrode of the sparkplug, from the coil is a high negative, not positive voltage.
