When I took mine apart it didn't have that spacer. I think the parts book says optional. I put one in when I put it back together. You may have needed a new one. i think I remember having a hard time decideding which side was up on the thrust bearing. I guess I guessed right.
I didn't change the bottom bushing on mine 'cause I had had such a time with the top that I couldn't face it. Would the hacksaw trick work on the bottom?
