I have a 1946 A with a similar problem. I don't know if your M has wet sleeves, but if so, (and I think it does) you might want to replace the rubber O-rings that are sealing the bottom of the sleeves to the block. My A leaked the same way you described. After opening her up and discovering no visable cracks, I came here and asked the same question. I was told the O-rings on the wet sleeves tend to dry rot and leak over time. It's a cheap repair which will, at the very least, eliminate the O-rings as the problem. (I got my o-rings at Carter and Greunewald) After replacing them, and it still leaks, then I would suspect you probably have a crack somewhere. Of course, the above does not apply if you have a solid block engine. Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me via e-mail with any questions.
