Super M water in oil

Have a friend who's restoring a very nice 53 Super M. The local machine shop rebuilt the engine. Had a little water in the oil before the rebuild, now after being rebuilt and run in there's water in the oil again. He's pulled the pan and there's coolant around the botom of the #3 cyl/sleeve. Any thoughts? Head, head gasket, or block? We're leaning towards a crack in the block. Any advice or past experience would be much appreciated. BTW this is a bone stock rebuild, not a pulling tractor.
