Steve: A local auto electric shop sold me the new alternator set up for 6 volt, same price as a 12 volt off the shelf. I was using tractor a lot and needed it quick. He said for a generator quick is two weeks and for alternator quick is five minutes. He further stated all he needed do was change one internal wire. I believe he actually changed the regulator and as a auto electric rebuilder he kept spare regulators on hand. Quite frankly, I was talking with another customer and did not watch him. He was 5 minutes and I have an alternator that he says is 6 volt and it has been charging my 6 volt battery for 10 years. I fabricated my own mounting hardware. I am very happy with the set up, it has been trouble free. I would even suggest I have less problems with points, condencer, etc. The tractor I believe works better as the battery is always has good charge. Soon as I start my tractor I hit the push button switch that excites the alternator. Very important to use the push button switch for that, as if it is left on it will drain the battery. The interesting part on this is since I put the 6 volt alt. on my SA, I have moved 1300 miles. I now have a 140, I would like to do same with. I have never been right happy with the 12 volt alt. conversion on my 130. Local shops here look at me as though I have 2 heads when I ask for a 6 volt alt. The one guy who said he could do it wanted over $200. I think I may get my brother who still lives in area to get one and ship it, or I may try the link.
