I think you're right. The 6V + gnd alternator sounds like the best setup / compromise in terms of keeping it half way original and half way workable.

Wish I could find a source detailing the rectifier diode setup and regulator modules they use to change over a common Delco. As yet - no joy. The auto electric shop I used to depend on has given itself over to specializing in 200 + amp chrome or gold plated alts for the mobile boom box generation.

I did find two other places on the web that do "alternator alterations" for old cars. Also, there are a number of listings in Hemmings.
