I've though of using wood to replace the paper and I think this would be possible if you have the wood working equipment to make the wood circles you would need to laminate together. In my younger days, we used a homemade (or is that farm-made) wood belt pulley on the MD to run the hammermill. This was done because a larger pulley was needed to turn the hammermill fast enough. This however was a solid wood pulley that I guess was made on a wood lathe. I suppose my Uncle made the wood pulley to save the cost of buying a the larger factory made one that would have been available.
