I have been watching this with great interest and I have to try to explain this. (I am an electronics engineer by profession, but I don't claim to know it all, far from it, BUT) In a series circuit, the current is the same at all points as has been pointed out, BUT the voltage is not and where you place the resistor does make a difference in the voltage. Any resistance, whether as a "real" resistor or as distributed resistance as in a wire causes voltage to be decreased. So the further you are away from the source of power, i.e. battery in this case, the lower the voltage will be. This is easy to verify in a circuit. Just start measuring at different places in the circuit with a voltmeter. SO, all that said, if you have a 12 volt battery and 6 volt coil, you MUST place your ballast resistor somewhere between the battery and the input side of the coil.
