I am not real familiar with the 234 picker, but I am real familiar with IH tractors and mounted pickers (New Idea). Unless there is a lot of difference in the 234 and the New Idea, I don't think you will do much picking in third gear. Our picker is the last model of NI with the 12 roll husking bed, and we run it in second and first on a 450 diesel. The picker itself will be pretty easy to run, but depending on your terain a 100 bushel gravity bed and 1500 lbs of picker is awful hard to pull unless your field is flat and hard. I have seen dad hang up the picker and an almost full bed of corn on level ground. If you are going to pick sweet corn, this will not be an issue since the ground will be dry. You will definately miss the live power unless you have big fields. It will definately do the job (dad had a strait M under his first picker) but there are some drawbacks to an M compared to the 400 adn up. I really think you should sell the 234 to me to tell you the truth. That would save you a lot of headache. :)

"It's a tough little tractor, although it's a hard starter being a diesel and all." He did manage to get it running, compliments of a can of ether. Once started it putted along pretty good. It
