Heath: There are two possibilities here--first is that there was ether in the tire--it's an old trucker's trick to put a squirt of ether in the tire when you're mounting it, then light it to set the bead. The problem is that too much ether can either blow the tire off the rim or blow it up entirely, with results similar to what you mentioned. Additionally, residual fumes can ignite at a later date, again with potentially tragic results. The other thing that can happen is that too much heat from welding can cause the air in the tire to expand and/or melt the rubber of the tire, both of which can cause a blowout. For these reasons, it's best not to use ether (and illegal on over-the-road trucks) or weld on inflated tires.
