I'd sort of come to that conclusion. So I'll replace them this spring as soon as some of the snow melts so I can get it in the garage. I am aware that the brakes will not work as well as modern ones do. When you say pricey, about how much to brake bands run? I have a set of the older style but my tractor takes the newer style.
