Are you trying to shift on the fly? The cub trans has no syncros to aid gear changes. When you push the clutch in the tractor can't be moving and enough time must pass for the driveshaft to stop turning. With the clutch engaged the driveshaft is spinning at engine speed even in neutral. They always seem to grind a little if you are in a hurry.
