Ben, the lower bearing insert has a hole in it and an oil transfer groove. The shims fit up against the edge of the bearing insert to keep it in place and tight. I don't think they have a front or back, just a top and bottom. The shims keep them from spinning. I try to keep the heavy steel shims on the outside (against the bearing shell) and put the thin shims in between the two heavy ones.
