will it hurt an alternator if you,,,

I'm converting a Farmall 400 gas to twelve volt, and a question came to mind. If you have a single wire alternator that runs from the battery, to the amp guage, than to the alternator, and you have to charge the battery, will it hurt the alternator? Basicaly if there is a charge going to the alternator, will it damage it? It's a $58 Delco-Remy
