Alternators have diodes. The diodes serve two purposes: Convert AC to DC by cutting off one side of the sine wave, and also have the effect of a one way valve, like the cutout on an early 3 brush generator. So when the alternator is turning, it produces power (as long as there is power at the terminal to excite the field) and stops producing and prevents backflow when stopped. The only danger to the alternator is if you try to charge or jump start with the cables reversed. Always look first to see that the negative goes to negative,a nd the positive to positive.
