......I agree somewhat with Harvey, however most of the energy from the secondary coil winding is dissipated across the plug gap when the plug fires. The back EMF generated by the secondary coil when the plug fires will be the reverse of the ratio of the primary to secondary voltages, i.e, if the 6 volts across the primary winding gives you 15,000 volts in the secondary, any residual voltage in the secondary will only be able to induce 1/2500 of that in the primary coil winding. One of the critical components in protecting the points is the capacitor(condenser) which allows the current to surge into the coil after the points make contact, thereby reducing the arcing.
