This is only a guess, but if you have been charging 12 volt batteries for 35 years, perhaps the switch is corroded in the 6 volt position. Nothing different about 6 volt -- I have a 6/12 volt charger that is 33 years newer than yours and works fine on both systems. I have a 10 year old 12 volt only charger that I have a heck of a time getting good connections even when the battery is off the tractor. I think you have a charger problem.
