Johnny, the short hyd levers just tell me that someone didn't use the hydraulics very much. IH offered an update kit for the 50 series that put the long lever on any of the 50 series. In my area it is very, very rare to see one with short levers on still. they had nothing to do with updates in the tranny. The only 50 series updated from the factory were the very last tractors. Most of these tractors have been updated by now but there are still some out there that haven't been. The most popular tranny update is for the speed transmission, there are some aftermarket companies that make kits for these tractors that are a cheaper fix than an IH kit. These tractors are very good tractors and have very good hydraulics. They are the same basic tranny as the Magnums, just not a full powershift.
