JW - Here's a few possibilities:

1 - Not using the correct regulator. (Gen and regulator must be matched w/ each other)

2 - Intermittant or poor ground at the regulator. Run a dedicated ground wire from the regulator base and ground it to the generator bracket.

3 - Ground polarity reversed. Some regulators are short lived when operated reverse polarity. These usually have polarity marked on them. (This is a long shot - most older regulators are polarity insensitive)

Any idea exactly WHAT is failing in the regulators - cutout contacts, relay coils, resistor burnout or ??? This could provide clues into the failure cause...
