Voltage regulators failing

My buddy has a Farmall 460 gas that keeps eating voltage regulators. He has had the generator off and checked at the electrical shop and they said it looked good and put out a hair over 14 volts. His regulator has one big wire coming in on one side and three smaller on the other. I told him to check the wiring harness and make sure that there is nothing shorting to ground. What else could be going on?
