Remember there is a drive gear in the distributor which slows and reverses the rotor bug from the input direction.

The rotor bug turns clockwise when viewed from the rear of the tractor, but the hydraulic pump turns CCW.

I can't tell you whether a 450 LPG pump will fit but it seems like it should.

Your bench test was not wrong, it was successful.
