Matt a couple of things come in mind on the knocking. My rebuilt 51H has a slight knock but I think that is probably due to a slightly worn cam with flat spots. Anyway, definitely check your valve clearances. .017 is the correct gap. If they are wider than that it can make her pretty noisy. If that doesn't help, I would recommend you drop the pan and inspect the connecting rods. You might have an assembly that has gotten loose. The initial smoking is worn valve guides but I wouldn't be concerned at all about that. One of my Hs smokes slightly on start up if it has set a spell. On the flushing, I have not had an H with much of a buildup. Someone else might have a recommendation on that.
