what should you check for and do on a engine overhaul on a cub

i am attempting to restore somewhat my first cub. However,plan on working this tractor also. the oil is black and my filter tube or tube running down from the oil filter housing is plugged with something that looks like grease.Could this be part to blame for the oil being so black? Also i want to replace the front seal? any info would be appreciated. thanks.
