Clark - It's been some time since I've messed with a gas-start IHC diesel, but do recall the over-center kinda feel and a distinct "snap" sound when the decompression lever position is switched. The fact you're not getting that snap makes me think either the mechanism is out of adjustment, or something is worn/broken. I recall also the actual over-center/detent action occurs on a tripping lug on the starting valve actuating shaft (inside the rocker box), which is why there's nothing that would go over-center on the outside of the engine that you can see...but I'm not certain. Regarding cranking speed, once the starter gets the crankshaft spinning, speed will be about the same in both gas and diesel mode. However the starter will have a more difficult time making the first couple of revolutions with the lever in diesel mode than it will in gas mode, if the starting valves are indeed opening in start mode. Hey - good news on that steady stream of gas out of the carb bowl! At least you know gas is getting that far into the system! ...Bob M
