Small gear shift lever on RH side of trans housing

I have a 1951 Farmall MD that has a small gear shift lever on the right side of the trans housing. It has M-W Gear CO. Anchor ILL cast into it. I can shift it up and down but it makes no difference in the speed of the main transmission. I know it is not a T/A as this would be a larger lever. Also 1st,2nd & rev. gear speeds are a lot faster than on my other Farmall M. Could someone shed some light as to what this lever would be for? Thanks.
