Jeff, that lever is an overdrive lever. for all the gears except 5th.I have a 43 M with it, I don't use it much anymore but we did when we hoed corn and beans with it,worked real well. It makes 1st gear like 4th. If yours don't work maybe it is unhooked inside, don't know much about the guts of it, as I have never had to take the transmission apart. I do know if you use it, it also speeds up the belly pump for the hydraulics also which isn't good for it, so we would take the little slotted disc out of the pump drive from the bottom so when we used overdrive the hyd,s were unhooked. You maybe need to play around with the lever, sometimes ours wouldn't go into overdrive, the lever would pull out but not enough to engage the so we would push it back in and try again and it always worked.
