I can't help you much on the knock. Sounds like you already have lots of good information to work with. BUT as far as flushing the crankcase I say yes. Yes you can overload the oiling system with sludge and plug things up. You can also get rid of crankcase contaminates without any problems. You spend thousands of hours building up sludge, gums and varnish (not to mention the acid that can do more harm, than friction, on bearing surfaces) and I guarantee that the oiling system will not handle it all at once. But with the right product and a little patience you can clean out the crankcase without hurting the engine. A CLEAN ENGINE WILL OPERATE MORE EFFICIENTLY, LAST LONGER AND REQUIRE LESS MAINTENANCE. I could go on about all the water, unburned gasoline, sludge, acids, varnishes, resins and insoluable salts that go through your engine due to the combustion process. These contaminates reduce the efficiency and life of your engine. Justice Brothers makes two excellent products to clean your crankcase -- JB Internal Engine Cleaner and JB Oil System Cleaner both are good. The Internal Engine Cleaner is the old product that has been around for YEARS and the Oil System Cleaner is a new product they came out with recently. They BOTH will remove the sludge, gum and varnish while it is NEUTRALIZING the acid. DON'T PUT CLEAN OIL IN A DIRTY ENGINE. To flush a grossly sludged up engine do the following: Get the engine up to operating temperature, get the oil hot, then add the proper amount of JB Internal Engine Cleaner or JB Oil System Cleaner to the crankcase. Start the engine and let it run for approximately 5 minutes. Shut the engine down and let it set for several hours - probably over night. Next day drain the old oil, refill the crankcase with the proper oil then start the engine and run it until the oil gets hot and then add some JB Internal Engine Cleaner or JB Oil System Cleaner. Carefully monitor the engine as it runs. You should be able to run the engine from 5 minutes to 15 minutes before shutting the engine down and letting it set overnight. Next day change the oil and monitor the engine operation closely for the first 30 minutes of operation. You can't be sure just how much sludge is in that engine and you will have to take it out a little at a time. At your next oil change add some more JB cleaner and run your engine for 5 to 10 minutes before changing the oil. It would be a good idea to run some JB Engine Tune-Up or JB Heavy Duty Vehicle in with the fresh oil. www.justicebrothers.com
