Bill: You hit the nail right on the head when you said evolution. I remember the day I steped up on platform of 656, sat down in seat, crossed my legs just to prove it could be done. I thought to myself, Hugh, what you have here is a Farmall M with comfort. And believe me comfort was important. I once spent 48 hours in the seat of that 656 planting corn, stopping only to eat 8 hot meals my good wife brought me. I have also spent some long days in seat of letter series, 300 and 560. I can tell you it is no surprise to see guys in 60, 70s at farm events all cripled and stooped. It is the 26 hour days they spent in seat of old Farmall. Yes my friend, 656 was just a Farmall M with comfort, draft controlled 3 point, Live PTO, power steering and a little more power. Don't you pullers get your nose out of joint, I am talking about stock tractors that you plunk your backside in seat for the long days. I could have said the same about any other 06 or 56 series tractor. It just happens the 656 is the evolution of M, SM, SMTA, 400, 450 and 560 Believe me, IH did start decline after 56 series, I owned some of those too.

What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
